Annual Members Only: This year, owing to the increase in dues,
you may claim a $20 deduction from your total for Live & Learn Groups.

   

This Year's Bonus Trip:
Brandeis' Own "Antique Road Show" at Savage Mill

Friday, May 8 at 9:45 am - Carpools leave promptly at 8:45 am from Brooks Robinson Drive

The trip is free to all who have registered for four or more Live and Learn groups, and to all Live and Learn facilators and instructors. For all others, the charge is $10.

Our day will start with a meeting at the Paymaster's Office for a brief introduction to the mill, its history and Baltimore connections. Then, on to the International Design Center for coffee and a treat from Bonaparte's Bakery.

Next, the main event: Brandeis Own "Antique Road Show", with a free appraisal of one or two items of art, jewelry, or books per person. In addition, there will be time to browse other shops in the Center, with a discount coupon of 10%. Lunch will be on your own at Mikes Deli.

To insure that we have an accurate count of those attending, please check the appropriate box on your registration form if you plan to attend.

October 29: Sgt. Vickie Warehime, Spokesperson fot the Baltimore County Police Department, will discuss female perpetrators.
November 19: The Hon. Eugene Lerner, Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge, will speak on current cases in the courtroom.
December 3: Eleanor Naiman, Attorney at Law, will discuss elder law.
December 17: A representative from the Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office will speak about arson.

10. Gallery Grazing - NOTE: TIME & DESCRIPTION REVISED 8-15-08

3 Fridays - 11:00 am, 10:30 am & 10:30 am - Fee $20

A good look at local galleries. In each one, a knowledgeable person will discuss the art on view and place it in a larger historical content. All the galleries will provide light refreshments. Carpools will be arranged if needed.

October 24: Gallery Imperato, 921 E. Fort Ave., Suite 120, features an exhibit of delicate hair drawings and mixed media assemblages. Note: this session starts at 11:00.
October 31: Craig Flinner Gallery, at 1117 West 36th St, Hampden, is known for vintage European posters, antique prints and maps, and some contemporary art. (10:30 am)
November 21: Meredith Gallery, 804 N Charles St, specializes in art furniture and shows a variety of contemporary works in various media. (10:30 am)

December 5: Johns Hopkins, Director of Baltimore Heritage, tells "How Preservation and Development Have Shaped Today's Baltimore."
December 12: Dean Krimmel, Creative Museum Services and son of Brandeis Member Winnie Krimmel presents "This Country Is For Me: Baltimore as an Immigrant Port of Entry."

Like to read non-fiction books on a wide range of topics? Dig in before the first meeting with the first book, The Path Between the Seas - The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914.  This classic epic by David McCullough is about people, not numbers.

14. Soft Sculpture Doll Making

An unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and the bewildering contradictions between home life and public life told in graphic novel format. Participants are responsible for reading the book or watching the DVD prior to the first meeting.  Both are available through BCPL. The Savetmans lived in Iran for a number of years.

Explore the lives of great teams in American music: Lerner and Loewe, Rogers and Hammerstein, and George and Ira Gershwin. How did these gifted men use their talents to create their magical, musical legacy? Explore their lives, the times in which they lived, and listen to and sing their outstanding musical compositions.

Those who registered last year will be admitted at no charge.

Carpools will gather at Brooks Robinson Drive (formally Radio Tower Dr) at 12:30 pm except for the May 27 trip to Washington.

September 3: 1:30 pm arrival: Evergreen House - 4545 N Charles St - A guided tour of the beautiful 19th Century Italianate house, museum and library, including a magnificent art collection and antique furniture.
September 10: 1:30 pm arrival: Mount Claire Museum House - 1500 Washington Blvd - Guided tour of the summer home of Barrister Charles Carroll and his wife, which contains furnishings that belonged to the family, Charles Wilson Peale portrait, and porcelain collection.
September 17: 1:30 pm arrival: Museum of Industry - 1415 Key Highway - See the oyster cannery, blacksmith shop, machines and garment loft, with demonstrations, plus other fascinating exhibits.
May 27: Two Smithsonians: Hirshhorn and National Gallery of Art - Carpool will gather at 8 am at Brooks Robinson Drive - Travel by MARC train ($7 round trip) from Penn Station to Union Station for docent-led tours of two of the nation's most outstanding museums. Fare and lunch are participants' responsibility.

29.  A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Conservatory in Druid Hill Park

Tuesday September 23 - 1 pm - Fee $10

Location:
The Conservatory in Druid Hill Park, McCulloh St & Gwynns Falls Parkway. Carpools leave Brooks Robinson Drive at noon.

Enjoy a visit to the spectacular Victorian glass-enclosed Conservatory build during three different centuries. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the outdoor garden. A staff member will conduct a guided walking tour of the newly renovated structures, exhibits and gardens. Fee includes entrance donation, canned soda and dessert treat.

30.  You Never Call! You Never Write! A History of the Jewish Mother - A Brandeis Syllabus Course

The course is based on Joyce Antler's book, a delightful and insightful look at one of the best-known figures in pop culture. Copies of the book are available through BCPL. Participants are responsible for obtaining the book prior to the course.

The Brandeis National Committee welcomes new members, both men and women. Membership is $60 per year. To join, send email with your name, address, phone number and a note that you'd like to join, and you will be contacted.

If you have not yet paid annual membership dues, you must send a check for your dues to BNC Baltimore's financial secretaries, not to the course registrar, before you may register for courses: For those whose last names begin with A-K, send to Judy Berkowitz; L-Z, send to Natalie Jeffrey.
BNC Course Registration
  1. Only paid-up annual or life members may register for study group courses.  See above for information.
  2. Please register before August 15 to insure your course placement and notification of any schedule adjustments. Processing fee is $5. Courses may be cancelled if enrollment is insufficient.
  3. Registrants may host a non-member guest for a single meeting, with advance approval of the course facilitator. A few courses entail a charge for guests.
  4. Fees for materials or books are paid directly to the course facilitator at the first session.
