General Meeting

Brandeis book discussion. The featured book is being read by Brandeis freshmen: The Places in Between by Rory Stewart. It is the story of his walk across Afghanistan in 2002 and the people he meets. Bernice Seiden will review the book and then engage us in a spirited discussion with thought-provoking questions.

Free for members, $5 fee for guests/non-members, at the Pikesville Library meeting room. Light refreshments will be available.

General Meeting

Charming and vivacious Harriet Lynn was a featured musical theatre performer in National Broadway Companies, including the comedic role of Minnie Faye in 'Hello, Dolly!' with both the Betty Grable and Ginger Rodgers companies. She also worked with Howard Keel in a Broadway National Company of 'On a Clear Day.' Now both an actress and acting teacher, she will perform in black tie and tails as Baltimore-born male impersonator Ella Shields, who conquered the London Palladium in the year 1910, with her most famous song, "Burlington Bertie from Bow". She was the inspiration for the film Victor Victoria. Harriet will reveal Ella Shields' fascinating life.

This event free for members, $5 fee for guests/non-members, at the Pikesville Library meeting room. Light refreshments will be available.

Closing meeting at the Woodholme Country Club.

Poet Dr. Michael Salcman and Susan McCallum-Smith, Literary Editor, The Urbanite.

Following a delicious luncheon, Dr. Salcman will read from his recent books of poetry for the first half of the program, and during the second half Susan McCallum-Smith will interview him. Dr. Salcman's poetry is beautiful and accessible.

Afterwards, both will be happy to answer questions.

Sit and Knit Open Meeting Held

Merle Ann Siegelman reports that because of scheduling constraints, the members of the "Sit and Knit" study group would have no get-together from September until January. Therefore, we arranged for an open meeting on November 12, 2008, at the Woolstock Yarn Shop in Glyndon. Leslye Solomon, the owner, an expert knitter, teacher and author, welcomed us, baked us brownies, and freely offered us her expertise and assistance. Everyone enjoyed herself.

Mission Statement

Brandeis National Committee is an organization committed to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished liberal arts and research university founded by the American Jewish community. Its membership is connected to the University through fundraising and through activities that reflect the values on which the University was founded: academic excellence, social justice, non-sectarianism, and service to the community.

Goldfarb-Farber Library

BNC allocates significant financial resources to establish general and named scholarships and fellowships.

Members can attend lectures given by faculty and enroll in study groups that use Brandeis faculty authored syllabi. See our Live and Learn page for course listings and our calendar page for class meeting dates and times.

There is also an opportunity for service to local communities with projects emulating the University's mission focusing on education, literacy and ending hunger.

The Bulletin is the newsletter of Brandeis National Committee - Baltimore Chapter, and is distributed to all Baltimore Chapter members.

Membership Notes Barbara Barr's Chavurah Group for new members has been most successful. The next scheduled meeting is Monday, February 16 at 1:30 at the Park Towers West meeting room, 7121 Park Heights Ave. We are showing the video on the founding of Brandeis University. All are invited. If interested please call Barbara Barr or Rochelle Savetman.
